Science encourages our children to respond to the big questions about the purpose and meaning of all of Gods creations.
“Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.”
Psalm 111:2
Intent
At Holy Spirit, all pupils will learn to think scientifically by developing their enquiry skills through Biological, Chemical and Physical investigations. We aim to encourage and nurture the curiosity our pupils inherently have in helping them to make sense of their world and other natural phenomena. We want our children to be able to explore, think critically, question, speak and write like a scientist and be able to transfer this skill across the subject disciplines and through to their schooling career and beyond. Our children will also understand and appreciate the role that Science has in society, its importance, relevance and demand for the future in preparation for their role as global citizens.
We use the Science Mastery program from Arc Curriculum. It is ambitious and is proven to develop reading, vocabulary as well as scientific skills and subject knowledge. Science Mastery contains everything needed for a deep understanding of Science curriculum topics. It sparks pupils’ curiosity, and helps to bring fun to every lesson!
Implementation
Within EYFS, Science plays a key part within ‘Knowledge and Understanding of the World’ and plays a vital part within the exploration, learning and play of younger children as well as scientific knowledge. Children begin to understand ‘working scientifically’, whereby appropriate to their developmental stage, and beginning to develop a curiosity about natural phenomena.
Within years 1-6 we follow Arc’s Science Mastery program, which provides highly detailed workbooks and supporting slides. These encourage children to think about prior knowledge and use prediction skills to think about what they would like to find out. The vocabulary used is highly ambitious and ensures a consistently high level of teaching and learning across all year groups. Knowledge organisers are present in each child’s workbook to allow children to recap and check information. There is room for greater depth for children to develop their mastery further while the visual aids and structured layout support learners with additional needs.
Impact
We believe our children will:
- follow a progressive Science curriculum that meets the needs of all pupils.
- develop and apply a broad vocabulary of Science which will enable them to articulate their understanding of taught concepts.
- develop their scientific knowledge, conceptual understanding and ability to think and act scientifically.
- use a range of investigations and practical activities giving them a greater understanding of the concepts and knowledge of Science.
- build on their curiosity and their sense of awe and wonder of the natural world.
